Smoke from fires in Indonesia

Smoke from fires in Indonesia, 29-September-97
Earth Probe TOMS has been detecting smoke from the fires in
Indonesia and other areas in the South Pacific during 1997
and 1998. You can view images of the smoke
by following the links below. Since Earth Probe TOMS does not
have full global coverage, these images were created by compositing
2 days worth of data in 1998 (when the orbit was boosted up to
740 km) and by 3 days worth of data in 1997 (when the orbit was
at 500 km). The largest amount of data comes from the date specified
on the image. The links below indicate the last day of data used
for each image.
1998
The images for 1998 start in early February.
NOTE: By April 22, the fires had diminished enough that
smoke levels are now near the threshold we've been using in these
images. If the fire levels increase, we will start posting more
images. 1997
The 1997 images start in September and
continue through the first two weeks in November, when winds
and monsoon rains finally cleaned and cleared out the area.
